## Frequently asked questions

### Can I download these patterns for free?

90 of 109 are free to download right from the pattern page. The other 19 are on the makers’ sites: we don’t host them and link to the maker instead — free or to their shop.

### Which pattern should a beginner start with?

There are no easy patterns here; the most approachable are medium: [Riona Tote](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/p/horane-leather/shoper/), [Rivel Messenger Bag](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/p/redquilt/messendzher-s-applikatsiey/) and [Garden Forty 40 Tote](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/p/artemis-antler/shoper/). All easy patterns in the catalog are in [Easy leather patterns for beginners](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/t/for-beginners/).

### Are there video tutorials?

Yes, 58 of 109 come with the maker’s video tutorial, which you can watch right on the pattern page. For example: [Michaela Bag](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/p/creative-awl/michaela-bag/), [Kinsey Mini Bag](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/p/creative-awl/mini-sumochka/) and [Lorvik Travel Bag](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/p/gizmolt/dorozhnaya-sumka/). All patterns with video are in [Leather patterns with video tutorials](https://www.leathercompass.com/en/t/with-video-tutorial/).

### How do I print a pattern at actual size?

Paper sizes: A4 — 75, A3 — 14, Letter — 14, A0 — 3. Print at 100% scale (“Actual size”) with “Fit to page” turned off, and check the test square or a piece dimension with a ruler before cutting.

### What leather should I use?

The body is usually cut from 1.4–2 mm (3.5–5 oz) leather, handles and straps from firmer 2.5–3.5 mm (6–9 oz) leather. Makers often give the exact thickness — check the description and notes on the pattern page.

### What language are the instructions in?

Instruction languages: English — 74, Russian — 4, Japanese — 1. Even without the language you can follow the drawings and video tutorial, and titles and descriptions on the site are translated into English, Russian and Spanish.
